Sassy new sound for Jessica Mauboy

Darwin diva Jessica Mauboy has moved up the Australian music charts.

Go Get Em: Jessica Mauboy says she is pleased with the response to her new album.

Her single, Saturday Night, featuring Ludacris, has climbed from 10th to seventh on the charts.

This is the video and it's sure way better than the previous video 'Get Em Girls'. Yes, the rapper has been removed from this version of the song - and it's 100% pure Jess. The clip is another one directed by Hype Williams.

Sassy New Sound for Jessica Mauboy

Former Australian Idol winner Jessica Mauboy is back with a new album and a sassier sound.

Mauboy is the first to admit that her first album, the double platinum Been Waiting, was a 'safe' choice musically.

Her second album, which was released in New Zealand in November, Get 'Em Girls, ramps up her sound and features a who's who of US music producers, as well as collaborations with Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and Jay Sean.

To make the album Mauboy left Australia and went to the United States to find her sound.

"I travelled over to the States on my own and it was nice to become independent and become in control of the album," Mauboy says.

"It was really interesting to see how I would work around unfamiliar people, it was nice to get my grounding.

"I really found I became so much stronger and that stepped up the album musically and lyrically.

The first single released off the new album features rapper Snoop Dogg, who also appears in the video.

"It was quite nerve-wracking at first. Going overseas and being in a different environment and a different culture was hard enough but to be there with Snoop Dogg who I look up to was amazing.

"We thought he'd come in and demand so many things but he totally wasn't like that at all.

"It was nice to sit back and watch him do his thing!"

Mauboy says the response to the album so far has been "incredible".

"I just wanted the reaction to be 'What the? She's saying all these things... and what?'

"People really recognise my music now," she says.

"I'm really happy that people are getting that urban R 'n' B style."

A recent performance on the Australian television talent show The X Factor saw Mauboy come full circle - four years after she won Australian Idol.

"It was really nice to be back on stage. I did Idol in 06 so it was nice to go back and be like 'I'm growing' and to go back on air and show everyone what I've been up to."

Mauboy plans to tour Australia and New Zealand in 2011 to show her fans what she has been up to too.

Agnes Monica: "They acknowledge me as a singer"

When Agnes Monica pictures and videos on American Music Awards 2010 (AMAs) circulated on the net, many people were hit by surprise, including some local media (lol, where’ve you been?). Therefore when she got back to Indonesia a few weeks ago, she had them get in the line for some interviews. One of them is Indonesian teen magazine GADIS.

The pop princess answers the questions of how she landed as the AMAs international host and even better, performed at the Red Carpet Show, and gets us some facts straight to the core.

Getting a call by AMAs

“The AMAs was the one calling me. They were looking for an Asian who commands English fluently and at least has some achievements. They told me that they liked my style and were interested to have me as the host for the AMA Red Carpet,” explains the 24 years-old diva.

“I thought this could be a stepping stone for me. Because I could get to meet with lots of people there and have an experience as well,” she goes on.

Performing on the Red Carpet Show

People presumed Agnes would get to interview the world celebrities on the Red Carpet, but at the day none of us saw that happened. Then, was it true that she was being a host?

“God’s plan is far more beautiful than what I expected. So this is the story. When I was attending the press conference in L.A, they listened to my music and wanted me to sing, specifically my new song. But apparently, my US management didn’t want me to pre-launch the songs yet. Therefore, I merely told people (in Indonesia) that there might be a chance I’d sing.

“Finally they (AMA and her managements) compromised and told me that I would have a duet with Christian Chavez,” says the former child singer. “I and Christian practiced together from November 17th to 21st. I wrote the Indonesian lyric of the song and memorized the Spanish part. We performed at the Red Carpet Show. When we were performing, there were a lot of musicians, producers and great people there watching us singing.

“It was one bonus for me. Because the original plan was that I would just being the co-host. But I got a beautiful bonus more than what I had expected before,” chimes Agnes.

The day she performed at the AMAs Red Carpet, her followers on Twitter, @agnezmo, increased by 10,000 rapidly. (So far she’s already got 350,000++ followers).

Co-Host turn a Guest Star

“Our performance that day was a live cast via internet live streaming. There was a hot meter on live streaming; it’s the same kind of rating for TV. And when we were performing the hot meter rose so high that the AMA quickly altered all the plans.

“They didn’t give us the chance to be the hosts or even interview with anyone, because they wanted us to be the ones being interviewed. I was really stunned. On the other hand, I felt grateful because they finally acknowledge me and Christian as a singer. Because we are not hosts after all.

“I’m not saying being a host is insignificant whatsoever. Just actually it’s not Christian’s and my take. So in the end, one of the AMA hosts –who were supposed to interview the stars along with both of us- came to me and Christian and interviewed both of us. They told me and Christian to walk on the red carpet too. And it all happened just in the last minutes. I only had five minutes to change clothes after the performance. I sped off backstage on my high heels. And the weather was really freezing (when I was running). Hahaha..,” enthuses Agnes with laughter.

Getting celebrity best friends

Agnes Monica never ceases to mention her man of the duet at AMA as they became such close friend ever since. Is there a possibility of you having a crush with him?

“No, Christian is openly gay. But indeed, I got this real bond with Christian Chavez,” she affirms. Not only does with Christian, Agnes makes new close friends with other celebrities too, such as Lance Bass of N’Sync and American Idol Runner up Danny Gokey.

“When we were singing, Lance and David (David Lehre) suddenly came to watch us. They were supposed to host a show at the front row. They ran to our stage because they wanted to give us support. I was really touched. They are so nice!” Agnes gushes.

“I made friend with Lance Bass, someone whom I could only see on TV. I still keep in touch with Danny Gokey and Christian Chavez until now. People there appreciate things expressively. I feel touched (by their positive reception).”

Besides making new friends with the US celebrities, Agnes got many fans from Latin America as well. (Sometimes she tweets in Spanish for them).

The pretty lady who owns a clothing line ANYE, definitely has loads of fans. However, there are people who still craft negative opinion about her, in spite of the good performance she belted out at the AMAs. How does Agnes handle that?

“There must be some people who like and some who don’t. But those who like outnumber a great deal those who don’t. So am I supposed to think of those who don’t like?” she questions back.

Agnes admits still feels sad if she hears someone bad mouthed herself. “But I have one principle that keeps me collected, that my focus is just how to do everything to please God. If we only focus to please human, human never feels satisfied and we just end up stressful instead.”

“I always think that I'd better be silent and let my achievement silence them. And that’s what I did,” she smiles. Good job, Agnes!

Agnes and fashion

“Fashion has always been a huge part of me and my crew. That’s why I got a sense of fashion,” says the bookworm. Agnes gets influenced by Eastern and Western culture and we can see this example of mix-match on her dress when she performed at the AMAs 2010.

“I like to combine Indonesian-European element (to my design). I often mix and match a tutu skirt, t-shirt, Kebaya and Batik ornaments. I wore one of my collections from ANYE on AMAs.”

However, although she changes her hairstyle nearly as much as her fashion style, it's the bangs that she always keeps. “I don’t know why, but I still comfortable with my bangs. I like it covering half of my eyes. I just love that! It gives sense of character,” she adds.

According to the student of Oregon State University, there’s just one key to make her look cool in every style. “As long as I am comfortable with what I wear, I’m gonna wear it.”

Quotes of the year from Indonesian Heartthrobs

With so many articles of our heartthrobs, I could not resist to look back the piles and think what I would do to remind myself why I've liked them. As time passed by, I've gotta admit that I came to like most of these people more, and several less.

Since I love quotes so much, I came to the idea of compiling positive words they have uttered in the articles. Some exactly describes who they are, their personalities, and some are their own words that actually represent the wisdom of genuine stars.

As much as I love their personalities, I can't post all the heartthrobs' quotes right up here. Apart from time-consuming task and large file, it's because the interviews are mostly in narrative rather than direct speech/utter.

So there you go. Let's get them on in alphabetical order.

"I need someone who can be my friend to share everything without having the feeling of dependent. When that feeling occurs, things go wrong beyond our expectation." - Adinia Wirasti, actress

“Your future does not depend on what others can do or think about you. Impossible is impossible, that’s what I learned from The Bible."
Dream, believe, and make it happens." - Agnes Monica, singer/songwriter/actress

"We're all human, we all make mistakes. But that doesn't mean we forget. It's about being tolerant." - Anggun, singer/songwriter

"I believe there's a psychological explanation behind every character with a negative image, no matter how negative the image is." - Atiqah Hasiholan, actress/stage actress

"The maturity of a man is measured by his way of making every decision or taking stand on a situation by thinking about other people around him. Thus, the orientation of his decision is not merely about himself." - Christian Sugiono, actor

"I can't change the older generation, but I know I'm a public figure who can have a positive influence on the younger generation." - Daniel Mananta, host/designer

"I never say never, because I end up doing it anyway."
"I'm inspired by life, the good and the bad. When I see bad, I try to do better. When good, I'm inspired to be better." - Dewi Sandra, singer/presenter

"The definition of being an actress is very limiting for me. I would like to define myself more as something that's limitless."
"I believe I'm growing as a whole human being. Acting is my vehicle. People put a label on me and think that this is all I am. That's a big no-no." - Dian Sastrowardoyo, actress

"The most important thing about being sensual for a woman is that you need to stay elegant. It's an art to be sultry and sensuous." - Dominique Diyose, model

"As I did more creative writing, I realized that words can change the world through the human heart, as opposed to public policies or legal arguments." - Edward Gunawan, model/actor/director/writer

"To tell the future is to see how we're living our life at this moment." - Fahrani, model/actress

"I don't know what your definition of art film is, but to me, it has to have educational value, communicate to audiences and be acceptable in any sense, without sacrificing the art of the filmmaking itself." - Julie Estelle, actress

"I suppose if we want to get success we must dare to take different path and accelerate faster than anyone else." - Sandra Dewi, actress/presenter

"Human makes flaws. Don't take yourself hard when yo do wrong. It just makes yourself feel even more difficult." - Sherina, singer/songwriter

"There are two kinds of criticism. I'm willing to admit constructive criticisms no matter how trashy they are. Subjective criticism based on a prejudice toward my personality is not one that I would take seriously." - Vino G. Bastian, actor
